The disciplines of physics and astronomy have been studied in St Andrews for more than years. Today, the School of Physics and Astronomy aspires to be a beacon for outstanding research and teaching, and one of the top places to study the subject in the UK. The School is relatively small compared with many physics departments, helping it support a close community of staff and students.
The School aims to carry out world-leading curiosity-driven research which both pushes the boundaries of fundamental science and is of high impact, with national and global benefit. Its research is internationally known in each of its three strategic research themes: photonics, condensed matter physics and astronomy. Much of the research is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, including activities in functional materials, biophysics and exoplanetary science.

The conference was due to take place from July. We all find ourselves in an unprecedented and rapidly evolving situation, with governments around the world revising their guidelines on travel and social contact on a daily basis. This makes it impossible to predict what awaits us this summer. What is clear, however, is that this is not the right time to push ahead with plans to organise a large gathering bringing together people from across the UK and the rest of the world.
Even if a conference were to be lawful come July, it would surely be reckless to expose our community to the unnecessary risk of coronavirus transmission. Please rest assured that the conference is being postponed, not cancelled.

But courtesy of research by Donald Olson, a professor of astronomy at Texas State University, a little of the mystery surrounding the life and works of the Dutch master Johannes Vermeer may now have been cleared up. Olson, with the assistance of Russell Doescher, a retired professor in the physics department at Texas State University, made the deduction after mapping out landmarks during a visit to Delft and establishing the angle of the sun that would be required to create a thin vertical sliver of light seen grazing the centre column of the Nieuwe Kerk clocktower at the centre of the painting.
From there, the rest of the story falls into place, Olson claims. They conclude that the view of the painter is looking north, meaning the light would be coming from the south-east and it was a morning scene. But tower clocks did not have minute hands until late in the 19th century. Vermeer painted the Nieuwe Kerk with unobstructed openings in the belfry, which today are filled with the bells of a carillon, a musical instrument often found in churches.
